Hurricane season is upon us once again. It is important to consider your pets when preparing your hurricane kits. Here are some tips to help you be as prepared as possible if a hurricane were to hit our area.
-Make a plan: Preparing yourself, your family and your pets is very important. Have a plan that can be quickly and easily implemented. Keep supplies in a safe easily accessible place.
-Prepare a pet emergency kit: Your pet will need supplies in case of an emergency too. When preparing if you have multiple pets ensure you have enough supplies for all your pets. You should have enough water for 3 days, non-perishable food items(including a can opener if needed), a solid carrier, litter, litter box, puppy pads, plastic bags, leashes, harnesses, medicine and medical records in waterproof containers and a picture of your pets in case you were to get separated.
-Have a backup caregiver: In case you are unable to get to your pet when the storm hits have someone that has access to your pets and knows where the pet emergency kit is located. Ensure that your backup caregiver has your contact information and prearranged instructions for caring for your pets during the storm.
-Secure your pet before the storm hits: If you are riding it out through the storm place your pets in a small secure room or their crates before the storm rolls in.
-Stay calm: Your pets can sense if you start to worry or get panicked which may cause them to panic. Try your best to remain calm and keep a level head.
After the storm has passed your yard may seem unfamiliar to your pets due to debris. Before taking your pets out check your yard for harmful debris and make sure all fencing is still secure. Leash walk them while they are outside until they can reorient themselves to their surroundings.
